Rooftop Revelry: Capturing the Wild Vibes at The Benson, Cairns
When it comes to parties with personality, Cairns knows how to throw down. And on a recent wild night under the stars, I found myself with camera in hand, perched high above the city at The Benson's rooftop — capturing the kind of chaos you want to remember (even if your memory gets a little hazy).
Setting the Scene
The Benson isn’t just any rooftop — it’s a prime vantage point in the heart of Cairns, offering panoramic views of the city and distant ocean. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the venue transformed: fairy lights flickered on, basslines thumped through the floor, and the crowd rolled in, dressed to impress and ready to let loose.
Golden hour painted everything in honeyed tones — my favorite lighting to shoot in — and I made full use of it before the party really took off. Candid shots, fashion-forward portraits, and sweeping cityscapes set the tone for what was to come.
The Crowd & Chaos
There’s something electric about rooftop parties: maybe it’s the open air, the skyline, or the sense that anything can happen. This night was no exception. From impromptu dance-offs to outrageous outfits (shoutout to the guy in the LED jumpsuit), the energy was off the charts.
I moved through the crowd with a fast lens and a faster trigger finger, catching:
-
Frozen-in-time dance moves mid-air
-
Group shots soaked in neon light and laughter
-
Quiet moments in the corners, where city lights reflected in champagne glasses
Everywhere I turned, there was a story in the making — and the challenge (and thrill) was being ready to capture it before it vanished into the night.
