If you’re wondering how I work and how I document your wedding day, here’s a little insight into my approach.
At every wedding, I’m completely focused on creating honest, meaningful images for my couples. While I may appear calm and relaxed, there’s no off-switch for me once the day begins. I’m constantly observing, moving, and documenting, always responding naturally to what’s happening around me.
Every wedding is unique. The light, the location, the people, the laughter, the speeches, and the emotional moments all come together in a way that can’t be staged or recreated. These genuine moments are what matter most to me, and they’re exactly what I love to photograph. I fully immerse myself in the day, blending in more like a wedding guest than a traditional wedding photographer—while, of course, knowing exactly how to use a camera when it counts.
Telling someone where to position his or her arm, or how to stand just feels like a complete contradiction to me. In fact, the portrait side of the day is much more relaxed than I think most of my couples perceive, it’s about taking a quiet moment away, going for a walk and reflecting on what the hell just happened!!! Some couples laugh and joke about which single guests might be “hooking up” later that night, or which family members aren’t seeing eye to eye, but some just cherish a little peace and quiet. Couple portraits usually take place over 2 windows, no more than 10-15 minutes long, who needs longer?!
I guarantee I will never pull you away from your wedding day for a sustained period of time, any images of couples you see in my work are always created within those 2 windows. The goal is to capture some incredible portraits of you both, without anyone wondering where you’ve been.
03. Posing-Free, Natural Wedding Portraits
This is probably the part that sets me apart from being a purely documentary wedding photographer—and it often surprises other photographers too.
I’m frequently asked about posing techniques, but the truth is, I don’t really pose couples. My approach to Cairns wedding photography is natural, relaxed, and guided almost entirely by available light and location. I might suggest where to stand to make the most of the scenery or catch that perfect sunset glow, but beyond that, I let you be yourselves.
I believe the best wedding portraits come from genuine connection, not stiff poses. Your photos should reflect who you are—your personalities, your energy, and the incredible tropical landscape around you. I’ll gently guide and direct when needed, but I won’t tell you exactly where to place your hands or how to tilt your head. The result is honest, effortless imagery that feels real, timeless, and true to your day. That said, I also offer styled and more traditionally posed shoots for couples who love a more editorial or guided look. Whether you’re after completely natural moments or something a little more curated, I can tailor the experience to suit your vision.
02. Constantly Creating on Your Wedding Day
From the moment I arrive on the morning of your wedding until I leave late at night, I’m constantly creating. As a Cairns wedding photographer, every second of the day is driven by creative decision-making—responding to light, movement, emotion, and the natural rhythm of your celebration.
During the ceremony and reception, those decisions come thick and fast. It’s non-stop, and I absolutely thrive on it. Whether it’s golden hour portraits at sunset or capturing the energy of a packed dance floor at 11pm, I’m always pushing myself to find the next image.
I'm always looking for that next image and iconic moment—the first kiss, your first dance, or walking back down the aisle together. Or it could be something quieter: a knowing smile from a family member, a laugh shared in the background, or an emotional moment that happens when no one thinks a camera is watching. These in-between moments are what define your wedding day, and they’re what I’m always searching for. The people around you, the reactions, the subtle interactions—sometimes even the guests trying to avoid the camera (yes, it happens!)—all become part of your story.
04. THE DANCEFLOOR
I use selective flash, because for the bulk of the day, I’m using ambient and daylight to create my images, you’ll rarely see me with a flashgun during the family photo’s, that’s for sure!!
But when it comes to the wild craziness of the dancefloor, I have a couple of setups that allow me to document the action in incredibly low light without it feeling like you’re stood in the middle of a photography studio!! Flashguns, used on low power settings, play an important role in how I document the shapes thrown by guests on the dancefloor! One thing is for sure, I’m absolutely not one of those photographers who has the engine running 10 minutes after the first dance!! I bloody love the dancefloor, and I’m not afraid to document it.
Wedding Photography in Cairns Is About More Than Just the Couple,
something I truly believe as a Cairns wedding photographer is that weddings—and the photography that documents them—aren’t just about the couple. A wedding day is about so much more than two people in front of the camera.
It’s about the moments. Not only the big, obvious ones, but the quiet, in-between micro-moments that happen naturally throughout the day. I’m always watching for connections between people, capturing genuine interactions as they unfold in real time. This documentary-style approach allows your wedding story to be told honestly and naturally.
It’s the photo of your dad raising a glass during the speeches. It’s your uncle Brian, who’s a bit of a character. It’s your best mate Lucy, who now lives overseas but made the trip back to Cairns just for your wedding. These are the images that bring your wedding gallery to life and truly reflect the people who matter most.
